A significant milestone has been achieved at the state-of-the-art "Gulfstream LNG" LNG liquefaction plant with the successful commissioning of its core natural gas pre-treatment facilities. This critical phase ensures the incoming natural gas meets the stringent purity standards required for efficient and safe liquefaction, paving the way for the plant's full operational startup scheduled for later this quarter.

 

The integrated pre-treatment process begins with the acid gas removal unit, a vital system that uses advanced amine-based solvents to scrub raw natural gas, effectively removing corrosive contaminants like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). This step is crucial to prevent pipeline corrosion and ensure the final LNG product meets environmental and market specifications.

Following this, the gas stream proceeds to the dehydration unit, which utilizes molecular sieve technology to extract all water vapor. The removal of water is essential to prevent the formation of ice hydrates during the cryogenic process, where gas is cooled to approximately -162°C (-260°F) to become a liquid, thereby avoiding potential blockages and damage to the plant's intricate heat exchangers and turbines.

In a key value-adding step, the facility also features a sophisticated NGL recovery from natural gas system. This unit employs cryogenic turbo-expander technology to separate and recover valuable Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, and butane from the methane stream. These NGLs are then fractionated and sold as separate, high-value products, enhancing the project's overall economic viability while ensuring the remaining methane is optimally prepared for liquefaction.
