CNOOC’s LPG recovery and renovation device makes offshore oil fields a new energy-saving force

At present, the recycling of non renewable fossil fuels remains an extremely challenging task, and the equipment and technology involved in recycling, processing, and reusing liquefied petroleum gas on a floating production and storage unit (FPSO) with relatively small space and highly concentrated production, processing, and living area modules are even more challenging.

In response to this, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has continuously optimized and transformed its existing technology and equipment in recent years, finally making the torch burning on FPSO no longer smoke black, and bringing the scale and technological means of resource recycling and reuse to a new level.

According to Chen Yimin, Deputy General Manager of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch, on November 5th, the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) recovery unit in Wenchang Oilfield of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch operated safely for half a month, running smoothly and achieving the expected results of trial production. The daily average recovery of liquefied petroleum gas was 110 cubic meters and condensate oil was 70 cubic meters. After the normal production of the Wenchang Oilfield LPG recovery and renovation project, approximately 100000 cubic meters of petroleum associated gas can be recovered annually. This project will play a positive role in marine environmental protection.

The LPG recovery and renovation unit of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch has achieved the expected results of trial production, which not only extends the economic life of the oilfield, but also indicates that in the future development process of resource enterprises, the recovery and reuse of resources will gradually improve to a level that is similar to or even more important than the production and development of energy.

Chen Yimin introduced that from the current perspective, offshore oil fields have enormous energy-saving potential because during the extraction process, gas accompanied by petroleum liquids will appear between the oil layers, mainly composed of methane, which usually contains a large amount of ethane and hydrocarbon heavy components. Associated gas recovery treatment refers to the separation of ethane, propane, butane, and heavy components from the airflow, which can be further processed and sold as pure components or natural gas mixtures (NGL) or LPG. Therefore, associated gas belongs to usable energy. However, due to technological constraints and the relative difficulty in controlling associated gas during oilfield development, a large portion of associated gas is either emptied or burned.

He also gave a vivid example to illustrate the problem: on the South China Sea Fenjin FPSO of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch operating in Wenchang Oilfield, a torch is burned year-round to process associated gas from offshore oil fields. After calculation, the accompanying gas and condensate burned by the torch on the Endeavour every day were equivalent to a Ferrari at the current price. Therefore, it is urgent for China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Zhanjiang Branch to launch a gas transformation and utilization project, improve oilfield production capacity, and promote the development of energy-saving economy.
