LNG ship freight rates will hit a new high in 2023

On Tuesday, the freight rate of liquefied natural gas (LNG) hit a record high again, because Europe was eager to lock up the winter energy supply, which triggered a battle for ships. Some buyers worried that they would not be able to transport fuel.

According to the data of Spark Commodities, the cost of renting a LNG ship in the Atlantic Ocean jumped to 397500 dollars a day on Tuesday, surpassing the record high set last year. Spark Commodities collected data from ship brokers.

As traders and utility companies hoard more natural gas, LNG ship freight rates for LNG production units are expected to continue to soar. This brings new risks to natural gas buyers this winter: buyers without ships will have to pay sky high freight to deliver additional fuel, and worse, they may find that they can’t book ships at all. On October 4, Parito analyst Eirik Haavaldsen predicted that LNG ship freight in small scale liquefied natural gas in the fourth quarter might exceed 1 million dollars per day.

According to LNG traders , there are few ships available for use in the rest of this year, and the cost of renting usable ships is astronomical freight. These traders also said that the energy giants may refuse to lease their ships to other buyers as usual due to the fear that the number of ships will become more tense in winter.
