LPG recovery plant are used in offshore oil fields

At present, the recovery of non renewable fossil fuels is still an extremely arduous task, and the equipment and technology for the recovery, processing and reuse of liquefied petroleum gas on a floating production and storage unit (FPSO) with relatively small space and highly concentrated modules in production, processing and living areas are even more arduous challenges.
In response to this, CNOOC has continuously optimized and transformed the existing technical equipment in recent years, finally making the torch burning on FPSO no longer smoke, and bringing the application scale and technical means of resource recovery and reuse to a new level.
According to Chen Yimin, deputy general manager of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch, on Dec. 5th, 2023, the liquefied petroleum gas  LPG recovery unit of Wenchang oilfield of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch operated safely for half a month and operated stably, reaching the expected effect of trial production, with an average daily recovery of 110 cubic meters of liquefied petroleum gas and 70 cubic meters of condensate. After the normal production of the LPG recovery plant and reconstruction project in Wenchang oilfield, about 100000 cubic meters of oil associated gas can be recovered every year. The project will play a positive role in marine environmental protection.

Offshore oil fields have great potential for energy conservation
The LPG recovery and transformation unit of CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch has achieved the expected effect of trial production, which not only prolongs the economic life of the oilfield, but also shows that in the future development process of resource enterprises, the recovery and reuse of resources will be gradually increased to the same or even more important level as the production and development of energy.
Chen Yimin said that at present, offshore oil fields have great energy-saving potential, because during the exploitation of the oil field, gas accompanied by petroleum liquid will appear between the oil layers. The main component is methane, which usually contains a large amount of ethane and hydrocarbon components. Associated gas recovery and treatment refers to separating ethane, propane, butane and heavy components from the gas stream, which can be further processed and sold as pure components or natural gas mixture (NGL) or LPG. Therefore, associated gas belongs to available energy. However, due to the restriction of technical means and the relatively difficult control of associated gas in the process of oilfield exploitation, a large part of associated gas is evacuated or burned.
He also gave a vivid example to illustrate the problem: on the South China Sea endeavour FPSO of CNOOC Zhanjiang branch operating in Wenchang oilfield, a torch is burning all year round to deal with the associated gas from offshore oil fields. After calculation, the associated gas and condensate burned by the torch on endeavour every day would be equivalent to a Ferrari at the then price. Therefore, it is urgent for CNOOC Zhanjiang branch to carry out the reconstruction and utilization project of horse associated gas, improve oilfield production capacity and promote the development of energy-saving economy.
